Mauricio Pochettino is not sure what type of reception he will receive after Chelsea’s final game of the season on Sunday, saying he hopes he is winning over the majority of his critics amid a fine run of form.

Pochettino has overseen an excellent end to the campaign, losing only one of their last 14 games in the Premier League, but ultimately knows finishing outside of the top four will be deemed a disappointment.

Chelsea can finish fifth if they beat Bournemouth and Tottenham lose to Sheffield United on the final day, but Pochettino insists he does not care what happens at Bramall Lane.

He is focusing only on his own club and was asked whether he expects to feel the love of the fans at full-time. ‘Look, I expect nothing,’ Pochettino said. ‘After it’s natural things happen.

‘They’ll come. But if not, it’s not a problem. I’ll show my respect, that’s the most important thing. We always try to be very respectful and we are very respectful.

‘We understand the fans are the best thing a football club can have. That’s why they’re entitled to give their opinion. As a coach, you have to respect them. Even social media now is being nice to me!’

Asked if he is hoping Tottenham lose so that Chelsea could clinch fifth, Pochettino said: ‘No, not really. We need to do our job and, after, see what is going on. I never wish bad things to the opponent.

'Always it is about us deserving to win and hoping we can take advantage of the situation that gives us the possibility to be in a better place.’

Sunday’s season finale with Bournemouth is set to be Thiago Silva’s last game at the club, ahead of the Brazilian signing for Fluminense in his homeland.

There will be a tifo unveiled by supporters to show their appreciation for the 39-year-old.
