Gareth Southgate names his provisional squad for the tournament on Tuesday, with major question marks over Shaw — who has not featured for United since picking up a thigh injury in the February win over Luton — and concerns too about Harry Maguire.
Ten Hag said of the pair’s chances of being fit for the FA Cup final against Manchester City a week on Saturday: ‘Harry Maguire has a fair chance that he will be available.
‘Luke is more complicated in this moment. Let’s say it’s less of a chance he will make it, a very small chance. For England, I can’t say. He had a setback, now we have to find out how far it is.’
Ben Chilwell played at left back in England’s last match, the 2-2 home draw with Belgium in late March, but the Chelsea man has also had an injury-hit year, playing only 13 times in the league and absent for the last month with a knee problem.
Manchester City’s Rico Lewis has also featured at left back for the Three Lions this season and is a Euros back-up option.
Asked about Shaw, 28, in March, Southgate said: ‘He’s going to be right on the edge of the season. We know now for him to play seven matches in a Euros is highly unlikely.'
